Trezor.io/Start | Official Getting Started Guide™

Clear, safe, step-by-step instructions to set up your Trezor device, secure your recovery seed, update firmware, and connect to Trezor Suite.

1. Download Trezor Suite (recommended)

Why Trezor Suite?

Trezor Suite is the official desktop/web app for managing your Trezor hardware wallet — it provides the cleanest, most secure experience for setup, firmware updates, and device management.

Step A — Get the app

Visit trezor.io/start and choose Desktop (recommended) or web app. Follow the download and install instructions on the page.

Step B — Continue in browser (optional)

If you opt for the web app, click “Continue in browser” and follow the in-app prompts to connect your device.

2. Connect your device & initialize

Physical connection

Use the supplied USB cable to connect your Trezor to your computer. Approve the connection on the device screen when prompted.

Initialize: create a new wallet or restore

When first prompted, choose to create a new device (generates a new recovery seed) or recover from an existing seed. If creating new, write down the recovery seed exactly as shown — keep it offline and secure.

On-device confirmation

Every important step (PIN creation, seed generation, firmware prompts) must be confirmed physically on your Trezor device — this prevents remote tampering.

3. Recovery seed: protect it like gold

What it is

Your recovery seed (12–24 words depending on model and settings) is the single most important piece of data — it restores access to your cryptocurrencies if the device is lost or damaged.

Best practices

Learn more about how Trezor handles backups and formats (BIP39/SLIP39 and word lengths) in the official documentation.

4. Firmware updates — keep your device current

Why update?

Firmware updates deliver security fixes and compatibility improvements. Trezor Suite notifies you when an update is available; follow the on-screen and on-device prompts to update safely.

Updating steps

  1. Open Trezor Suite and connect your device.
  2. If a firmware update is available, click Update now and confirm on-device.
  3. Wait until the update completes — do not disconnect the device.

Always use official Trezor Suite or the official site to update firmware; avoid third-party prompts.

5. Security basics & resources

PIN & passphrase

Set a PIN to protect device access and optionally enable a passphrase for an extra hidden-wallet layer. Treat passphrases carefully — losing them can make funds irretrievable.

Official security resources

Trezor publishes security pages, changelogs, and past-issue disclosures so you can verify fixes and best practices.

6. Support & supported assets

Need help?

Visit the official Support center for troubleshooting, order FAQ, or to contact support. The community forum is another good resource for common setup questions.

Which coins are supported?

Check Trezor’s official coin list for the most up-to-date information on supported assets and third-party integrations.

Final checklist (before you finish)

Quick safety checklist

If anything looks suspicious during setup (unexpected prompts, different screens), disconnect and consult official support immediately.
